Welcome to Mariposa (Butterfly)

In 1806 a team of Spanish Explorers (the Morgana Expedition) entered an area of beautiful green valleys, lush meadows and mountains densely forested with stately oak trees and pine trees. Cream and yellow butterflies seemed to be everywhere so they named the area Las Mariposas, or the butterflies.

The town of Mariposa is a bustling community of over 17,000 residents located south of the Eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park on Highways 140 and 49. The town and surrounding areas are rich in Old West history and heritage. Visitors to the Mariposa area may enjoy a stroll along the historic business district while touring the Mother Lode region of the Sierra Nevadas

Mariposa Yosemite Airport

This small airstrip is located 4 miles out of town on Highway 49. The elevation of the airport is 2252 feet. Runway length is 3306 feet long and 60 feet wide. Runway lighting (for night landings) is pilot controlled on Unicorn 122.7. Rental cars can be arranged with advanced reservations. Call 209-966-2143 for more information on the airport.

Mariposa County Courthouse (Historical Landmark No. 670)

The town courthouse was built in 1854 and is still in use. It is located on <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Bullion Street between Ninth and Tenth Streets.

Mariposa County Fairgrounds

The Fairgrounds are open year long and host numerous county events throughout the year, including the Mariposa County Fair in September. RV facilities are available. For information on the Fairgrounds and a schedule of events visit www.mariposafair.com.

Museum and History Center

Fans of Wild West history will enjoy a visit to the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Mariposa <st1:placetype w:st="on">Museum. Founded in 1957, the museum features a recreated 1850’s street complete with newspaper office, an assay office, a drug store, saloon and a sheriff’s office.

The old stamp mill (still functional) is available for viewing along with carriages and wagons. A large collection of Miwok items are displayed inside the museum as well as on the grounds.

California State Mining and Mineral Exhibit

The Mining and Mineral Exhibit is Mariposa’s only state park. The Fricot Nugget, one of the largest crystallized gold specimens found during the Gold Rush, is proudly displayed in the museum as well as mining exhibits and history. The museum gift shop is managed by the CSMMMA (California State Mining & Museum Association) and offers visitors mineral specimens, books and jewelry.
