Welcome to Coarsegold

Coarsegold, once a sleepy town on the way toYosemite National Park on Highway 41, is now a booming community in Eastern Madera County.

The town of Coarsegold is 7 miles south of Oakhurst on Highway 41. Mining flourished in the Coarsegold area from 1849 to 1865. By 1850 "Coarsegold Gulch" boasted 10,000 residents. Although Coarsegold was named for the gold mined in the area, coal and quartz were also plentiful. Take a look at the monument about the area in Coarsegold’s Historic Village, located on the corner of Hwy 41 and Road 415. The grapevine supported by the trellis in the Historic Village is one of the oldest living vines in California.

Points of Interest include the Coarsegold Historic Museum (south of Lucky Lane) and the Historic Village at Hwy 41 and Raymond Road/Road 415. The area is dotted with old mines, but many are on privately owned property.

The Coarsegold region ranges in elevation from approximately 1,200 feet to 3,000 feet. Downtown Coarsegold offers a grocery store (The Coarsegold Market), Busse’s Ace Hardware Store, numerous galleries and gift shops, several restaurants, fast food, convenience stores and gas stations, Yosemite Bank and the Coarsegold Historic Village with arts and craft shops and year round community events. Coarsegold's population is approximately 9,500.
